Colombia Get Away- “A Weekend on the Coffee Route”

If you like to travel new places with the beautiful landscapes and taste of the most delicious coffee in the whole world, then this travel is perfect for you.

Between the mountains of the Andean region, in the Colombian country, is a small state called Quindio, it’s part of famous coffee triangle, that state has 12 municipalities, this area that is already considered Cultural Heritage of Humanity according to UNESCO, there are activities to carry out, coffee farms, markets and coffee shops for you to visit.

To get to Armenia- Quindio, you must take a flight from the capital of Colombia- Bogota, there are different airlines of  high and low cost, so you have different options for your budget.

With an imposing green landscape, great mountains with snow, flora and fauna of great variety, and the tallest palm tree in the world which is a national heritage, Below are the main places to a weekend on the coffee route:

1.PARQUE NACIONAL DEL CAFÉ (COFFEE NATIONAL PARK)

Located only 12 Km (7,45 miles) from the  state capital  (Armenia), is the amusement park in the municipality at Montenegro.

In the entrance you will find a lookout tower, with a height of 18 meters, made in guadua,mangle, you will see a beautiful panorama of the region, you can view territory of the city Armenia, and municipalities as Montenegro and La Tebaida.

Before the fun starts, you can meet the museum of coffee, its tour will make you understand a next hike about the history of coffee.

On the hike a tour guide will tell you: how coffee is grown, processed and select the best coffee in the region and the second most delicious in the world. After you can visit some coffee houses and meet them inside, and see how the old peasants lived, and in that moment to move to that time trying a cup coffee from the park itself.

Then you can take a cable car and get off to food court, or if you prefer, you take a walk in the Forest of Guadua with a suspension bridge.

In front of the food court there is  a train station, this train will take you for a tour around the park, even leaving you in a horse barnyard and ride some horse.

And the next to the food court you will find more than 40 attractions that are divided into: thematics, aquatics and mechanics, for adults and children.

 

 

Some days there are two times the coffee show, It’s one of the most beautiful shows in Colombia, there with folk dances and with a narration in English and Spanish you will know more about the extraordinary Colombian coffee.

 

 

2.MARIPOSARIO (BUTTERFLY PARK)

In the municipality of Calarca  to 20 minutes from city Armenia, is the most complete  butterfly park in the world. It has more of 1.200 of butterfly own of Colombian, within a butterfly-shaped structure of about 640 m3.

But before entering and being allowed to touch by the butterfly’s, you should take a tour of the botanic garden and you will see the vegetation and some animals of the region, and as you will go up to a lookout where you can appreciate a beautiful landscape. And don’t forget that if you are in coffee zone you should stop in a coffee shop, take some a some cup coffee and eat coffee-based sweets.

3.SALENTO- QUINDIO

Is the oldest municipality of Quindio, is 30 minutes from the city of Armenia,  there are some coffee shops, typical food restaurants.

There is a street known as Calle Real, there you will  can see dozens of craft shops, the handicrafts are usually made of the guadua tree and coffee beans. In there street (Calle Real) there is a small square called Pasaje Real, for its colors and architecture, you will want to go and meet .

Is also the way to the viewpoint , there place will not go unnoticed for you, since the road is painted and can be see from any point of Salento.

There you can find the famous jeeps, those cars can take you to Parque Nacional de los Nevados (Snowscape National Park) meet Valle del Cocora, where you be submerged between farms, jungle and mountains.

4.VALLE DEL COCORA

Close from “Salento- Quindio” (20 minutes), there is one of the most important valleys of Colombia, some snowy mountains of the region and the river are the most important for the capital of the “Quindio” (Armenia).

In the Valle del Cocora you can meet the tallest palm tree  in the world, is known in Spanish as Palma de Cera (Ceroxylon quindiuense).

It’s has about 60 meters tall or some has 80 meter tall. It’s a national symbol.

To star enjoying the tour in the valley, you will have a delicious: tinto campesino, express coffee, or a soft cappuccino, but if before you want to eat, you can do it, there is a restaurant with typical food.

To do the tour you must ride a horse, and decide if you want a one hour tour (half hour to go river  and half hour back to the starting point ) or 2 hours, both will make you see the birthplace of the important river of Quindio and the beautiful palm trees.

There is a large vegetation, so the sunsets are incredible and magical for your eyes, no matter if the day is sunny or cold, you will  always have the best photos.
